Welcome

This site is designed to showcase and explain perspective sculptures, a very unique type of sculpture that changes its appearance depending on the observer's viewpoint.  Below is a brief description of what they do, and on the additional pages you will find pictures of the sculptures I have built so far and a short description of who I am and how I started making the sculptures.

Overview and Description

A perspective sculpture, at first, looks like nothing; a clutter of sticks suspended in space, like a pile of matchsticks that someone thought important enough to build a memorial in honor of its existence.  That's actually the idea; you're not supposed to be able to see anything at all in the jumble - unless the viewer stands at just the right location, where, as in the example above and to the left, he or she would be able to see the pieces align to form a word: Work.

But there's more to it than that.  There is another spot where the viewer can stand, which shows an entirely different word, as you see at the bottom of the image: Play.  The arrangement of pieces is carefully calculated and aligned so that the pieces form two different words from two different angles.  For a better demonstration of the sculptures, try the 3D representation here (requires Internet Explorer.)

I hope you enjoy seeing the sculptures; I've definitely enjoyed building them.  If you have any comments or questions, whether about the website or the sculptures, feel free to e-mail me at tom.cohlmia@gmail.com.
